1-gal Nano Tank
I know this is kind of a weird idea but... after I finish the planting with my 30-gal (won't take place till December) I'm planning on a 1-gal pentagon nano tank with only a pair of ghost or cherry shrimps as fauna. My plant list:
dwarf hairgrass bacopa caroliniana anubias barteri var. nanas java fern rotala rotundifolia Of course, I'll be trimming back the plants to keep the growth orderly. Substrate will be Eco-Complete, added trace elements/ferts Seachem Flourish and Flourish Excel. Thanks!

That sounds like alot of plants for that tiny tank. I think the dwarf hairgrass would look nice just it, and left it to grow as tall as possible.

Hmm... would the shrimps do well in such a setup? Do you think I can include some glosso or pygmy chain swords?

Hi DaAverageJoe and Gomer,
Can thess shrimps survive in a 1USG Nano tank without filtration? Perhaps change 1/3 water every 4 days.

Oh no, I plan to have a very small filter... Azoo Palm filter or Deco Arts Mini-filter, I haven't decided... which one's better?

The filters are exactly the same. Just differant name plates. Much like the Ford Ranger and the Mazda Truck. Both made by the same people!

Wow, how queer... I guess I'll go with the Deco Arts version, they have a darker black model that looks better to me...
Is it possible to add a VERY small Co2 reactor with a Co2 bell in the tank? Or is it jus way too risky for a crash and should I jus stick with the Excel?

A tank that small, I would just stick with excel. Injecting co2 could easily cause a crash!

I have a 1 GA nano tank that I keep at my desk at work. I have an Azoo palm filter and a CO2 natural plant system with a little diffuser plate on it. The C02 tank is just a small canister about the size of a 20 ounce bottle of pop and the diffuser plate is a small, flat plate that I hide behind a wall of vertical stem plants. The rate of C02 bubbles is very low because of the small size of the C02 tank, I would say, one per 5 seconds. I have kept 3 amano shrimp and 3 neon tetras in it for about 6 months with no problems. The slow rate of C02 bubbles and the low efficiency of diffusion into the water makes it seem unlikely to me that I will have a crash, although I've never tested the range of PH fluxuation. The use of an additive like Flourish Excel didn't occur to me, because I cycle about 1 coffee cup worth of water every day, which would mean most of it would be wasted.
Everyone at work loves the tank though and comes over to talk to me about fish all the time. Most of them want to know what is wrong with their Betta, heh. -Aphyosemion |

I made the mistake of transporting my (about) 1.5 gallon hex tank to work. Can't get any work done. People keep invading my office, looking for the ADF. BUT..when I have a difficult client (I'm in a loan investments position), it's nice to sit back and watch Ben and Jerry (the juvie black mollies), Carl (the oh-so-tiny cory cat), and Fred the frog do their things. ::grin:: All's been well for about six months with a twice-weekly dosing of a few drops of Flourish Excel.
