Why add Mg to Plantex?

I'm in the process of mixing up a batch of Plantex CSM+B and see that most recommendations say to add 1 tbsp of Magnesium Sulphate to the solution (500ml).

My question is: why?

- If your GH is above around 4 or 5 you probably have enough Mg anyway.

- If you have very low Mg in your water the above concentration is not going to help very much. According to Chuck's calculator, 1 tablespoon in 500ml stock solution gives you a 0.02 mg/l increase per ml added to a 200l aquarium . In order to get the Mg up to let's say 10mg/l you're going to need the whole 500ml solution.

So you might as well dose it seperately anyway...

So, why has it been recommended to be added to CSM+B mix?

I had MG separately rather than add it to my Plantex stock solution just so I have control of its dosing. My guess is that came from when Plantex was a mixture for the PMDD dosing.

Yes, adding MgSO4 to plantex came from the pmmd recipe. Here for details: http://www.thekrib.com/Plants/Fertil...-tim.html#roll. The reason is is because plantex doesn't have enough Mg. The design of the pmmd is a daily dosing of very small amounts...so the Mg doses are spread over time and don't make a large difference to your GH anyway. It's mostly just a traces sort of approach.

I of course don't add Mg to my plantex because my GH recently has started running out at 25.
