4 x otos
1 x GBR
2 x Threadfin Rainbow
4 x SAE

30 gal (normal) with Eheim 2217

Is the GBR gonna be stressed by the SAE? Am I overstocked?

You really like SAEs or something? If they're only for algae control, you can reduce it to just two or even take it all out, since you've got ottos. GBR will be fine in either solo or pair (male+female). Increase your threadfins. They're not exactly a schooler type fish but more of a shoaler. They'll still prefer to have some more buddies around and you'll be rewarded with more flares too. With only two, I don't think you'll get much action out of that. Everything else is fine.

You're not overstocked yet. And depending on how densely planted your tank is, you can add a lot more.

you're not overstocked. I've never had SAEs so I can't comment on their behavior.

SAEs will eat BBA and hair algae, ottos won't. I am looking to eventually get 10 or so threadfins

True but my SAE prefer bloodworms, blackworms and flake food over algae. Are you aware of how big SAE get? Mine are 5". Four in a 30 gallon tank may be pushing it. I have two in a 55 and if I could catch them, I would remove them.

are you going by the 1 inch per fish to 1 gallon of water rule? (it's crap) I agree your SAEs are a bit numerous, but you're fine concerning total fish count. In your case I would add a second (female GBR) and more rainbows, like already suggested. And do you have a planted tank? Or other hiding spaces?

I'd say you are definitely not overstocked, especially if the tank is planted. I agree with everyone else though on the SAE issue....i had 1 in a 20g who started getting too aggressive when he was about 3" long and i had to remove him. For a 30g tank, Amanos and Otos are probably going to be your best algae clean-up crew bet.

Either way, you definitely have room for more fish. A nice shoal of rainbows would look beautiful

All of my SAEs eventually grew to +5" long so you will be overstocked eventually, but not right now.

I don't have any SAE's anymore. I traded most of them in and the final 3 have since died.

Here's a picture of one from the belly side and another picture of the Flying Fox in the middle in front of the amazon sword which is the same size as the SAE's. The tank is a 75g.
