triple T8 or double CF ?

I am planning on getting 40G tank (48x13x16) from All Glass Aquarium. The tank is going to be heavily planted. My choices for lighting from the same company are -
1) triple tube high performance strip-lite (electronic ballast + 3x40W T8) 120W total (3W/G)
2) Compact Fluorescent Strip-Lites (electronic ballast + 2x55W GE 9325) 110W total (2.75W/G).

In both cases the lights are sitting on a glass versa-top. Any cons and pros for either choice which I should consider ?

thanks

Hi pvlogin, welcome to the Planted Tank!

Going with 3 T8 bulbs (3x 32W, unless they are T12s) will give you theoretically a more evenly lit tank, and they are running much cooler than the CF.

But you will get more/brighter light from the CF, and those usually come with much better reflectors than T8 bulbs. They get hotter, and usually cost quite a bit more than regular fluorescents.

Another point to consider is that you can overdrive the T8's if you decide you need more light later. (or remove one of 3 if you want less...)

Going with 3 T8's is more flexible in my mind and probably cheaper too.
