life span?

I'm new here trying to learn and start my own planted tank. I'm just really interested in growing anachris so i dont have to keep going to the pet store and buying it.

The question is how long does the subrate last? When you use things like Fluorite or eco-complete, do you have to ever change it at all? May be a silly question that's why i never posted before. I tried to check the old post, but didn't find anything. Can anyone give me an idea?

Hey Jumpshot, welcome to the Planted Tank! Good question!

Most substrates last a very long time. They don't dissolve or get used up, and they can absorb and exchange nutrients. Perhaps like good wine... they become better as they age...

flourite would eventually need replacing - but only when you hand the tank down to your grandkids in 50 years.
for our purposes, these 2 specialty plant substrates never 'go bad'.
something like laterite DOES need to be replaced, since it's more of a clay, and will dissolve over time.

Security Question
While balancing on a piece of wood, two inches by four inches known as a 2x4, John and his friend Sally both spotted a dalmatian inside of a truck with sirens. The animal with John and Sally is a _ _ _?
