Low Light Hours?

Hi, I was wondering how many hours everyone runs their low light set up? I run the high light, fert routine,CO2, etc., tanks for 8 hours. So I assumed it is correct to do the same with this tank. But today I started thinking, maybe I could run this low light tank a few more hours?

I run all of mine for eight hours, the only time I go lower is if I have problems.

Trial and error. I algae gets out of control if I run my lights more than 8 hours. I'm down to 6 hours/day these days...

I was just told to raise my light up a couple of inches. That way I can run the light longer (12hr) for my viewing pleasure.

I run mine for different hours depending on when I get around to turning it on and off. I'd guess mine stays on from 6 to 15 hours day to day. I suppose it averages around 8-10 on most days. It also gets about 1-1/2 hours of morning sun.

LOL @ fishman. Maybe it is dependant on so many factors that some people can get away with more hours, and others cannot. I might try an extra hour and see what happens. Thanks everyone for your input.

12 hours here. No carbon source or ferts. I do get some algae on the glass, but not much.

The only tank I have trouble with is my 20L which has 1.8wpg. I have spot algae in that tank which I don't think is related to the light or photo period. I also haven't done anything to try to get rid of the algae in that tank. I'll be switching it to my 29g when I move. Plus, I'll add extra light and am considering going to injected CO2. If I do, then I will definitely need to add ferts and alter the photo period since the added lights will change it to 2.5wpg.

Otherwise, on all my other tanks, 12 hours works well. There's just not enough light to support the algae. Even when I had my 75g with just a simple, cheap 30" single lamp fixture, I could run it for 12 hours while using silk plants! No problem.

So the real question is just how low is the "low light". The lower it is, the fewer plants you can grow, but the longer you can run the lights. The higher the lighting, the more you have to cut down on the photo period and the more necessity for CO2 and ferts.

Hey just wanted to ask if you have had any issues with any plants with your High PH?, more specifically in your non CO2 tanks.

I have a couple that should grow fast, well faster than Java Ferns, lol, bot dont seem to. L. Repens is the main one that I'm struggling with.

I agree with your comments about the amount of light:

To the OP what exactly is meant by "low light"?

I have 40w of spirals on my 10G and guestimate of ~100w of 2x ODNO 32w T8's(2bulbs) on my 55G. I have BBA/staghorn here and there, so I have been playing with the hours and dosing Excel and low ferts

My PH is low, I use RO water. Low light is under 2 wpg. I have 36 wts of T-5 over a 20 long.

I don't have a lot of plants growing in that tank so I'm not a lot of help there. You can see it in my 29g journal link below. I have Crypts, Java Fern, some barely alive wisteria and a sword that's growing slowly (which is fine with me).

I don't plan to add more plants until I switch the tank out from my 20L to my 29g tank and move it all to my house. But at that time, I also plan to double the light.

The tank has 1.8wpg of lighting now which is considered low-medium (I've heard 1.8 being the dividing line between "low" and "med" light).

If I didn't decide to increase the lighting, I think I'd go through the "low light plants" thread to carefully select the plants that would work well.

Just keep in mind that there are 3 factors which determine the rate of growth for plants (other than their natural habit, such as java fern). The plant will only grow as fast as the most constrained factor between the 3. The 3 factors are: (1) light, (2) ferts, and (3) CO2 (injected or Excel). Plants grow until they run out of the first of any of the 3. So when you limit the light, the plants cannot grow at their full potential speed, even with lots of ferts and CO2, because the light limits them.

If you want fast growth, you have to get higher light. But fast plant growth also means fast everything, including algae.
