I am not sure where I should store the unused yeast, should I store it in the refrigerator like the package says? Right now I have it in a small sealed tupperware container in the refrigerator. The question I have doesn’t yeast need to be at least room temp to be properly activated?

As long as you store it in a cool, dry place it will be fine. Refrigerated yeast should be brought up to room temp. before activating in warm water.

Do you store yours in the cupboard or the frige? A package if yeast should only be in "storage" for maybe a month, can yeast go bad in that short of time? If not Im going to leave it in the cupboard. seems better.

Store it in the frig, it will last a long time. I've done it for years (I like to bake a little bread every now and then). You shouldn't have any problems with the yeast. You also don't have to worry about it coming to room temp. I like to start with oh, a couple cups almost warm water, 1/4 tsp yeast (straight from frig) and about 1/2 tsp sugar, let this sit for about 15 min to get the yeast going and then I'll add the rest of the water and sugar.

I put it in the fridge, sealed tightly to prevent O2 exposure. Don't use tupperware that would have air touching the yeast; I wrap it in saran wrap. To activate the yeast I use water about 100F and whisk with a fork for 5-10 minutes.

I keep mine in the frig, before it is used I set the amount needed out to let warm up to room temp.

i buy the jars of yeast and they do last longer if kept cold.
like trenac points out, let it come up to room temp first before you add it (just the amount u need to add) so that the temp change from cold to warm doesn't shock the yeast.

You can easily use your hand to quickly warm the yeast too, if you're pressed for time.

This site ROCKS . . . I would not be anywhere near where I am with my tank without this site. The CO2 Reactor works like a champ. Now that I got a better light ( I was using a 15w florescent now I have a 65w CF on a 20gal 8) ).

From what I am hearing keep it cold if you need to store it, but bring it up to room temp before using ( or use lbsfarms mixing method).


Is it better to have the sugar completely dissolved before adding the yeast. Can you "kill" the yeast by shaking it to hard?

Does anyone de-chlorinate the water they use and if so with what?

Erie...I add hot water to the bottle then the sugar then I shake it intill mixed. The hot water helps the sugar desolve better. Make sure to let the water cool down to room temp before adding the yeast. After adding the yeast then just turn the bottle upside down once to mix the yeast, don't shake. I don't dechlorinate the mixture.

Here is my bad example...I kept mine in the fridge and just dumped a teaspoon in the bottle when I needed a new batch. After a couple of months I found my bottles only lasting 7-10 days. I thought the yeast had gone bad but maybe I just needed to warm it before mixing.

Or maybe the water in the bottle was too hot and killed off most of the yeast? You're not supposed to mix it with water that's warmer than 115 degrees. Water that's too hot will kill the yeast. Cold, on the other hand, won't hurt the yeast, it just slows it down.
