I think I was around 6 or 7? Still have that old 5.5gal, too.

I think it depends on each child and parent, really. Since you're already in the hobby you know how to take care of the fish and obviously will be the primary caretaker with a toddler's tank.

For me, I had a next door neighbor who was an avid hobbyist and helped me learn to cycle a tank and do it right. He loaned me some books and magazines and I knew more than my parents about taking care of fish within a few weeks, and by that age I was responsible enough to try and care for them correctly by myself. I don't think I would have been at a younger age, though, and my parents still don't care anything about aquariums lol.

My kids have each had a 20g since they were 3 and 4 years old. They put random stuff in moms tanks, not in theirs.

I just moved my old five gallon into my kid's shared room for my son's birthday. He also got to reshape it, choose new decorations and tiger guppies. (Momma got a new Mr Aqua...) The blue moonlights act like a night light. I'm so glad that I did! He's been begging for a tank in his room for the last couple of years and is so happy. The tank is lower than it used to be so he can see it better. My daughter now insists on sleeping in her own bed so she can watch the blue lights too at night! She's two and this is such a huge step. If I had known I would have done it sooner!!!!! They know they are not allowed to help clean it yet, and I pre-measure the food for them. They have to take turns. A five or ten gallon with a filter will always be easier to maintain. I have it on a Flexa shelf that is really deep, my daughter can't reach it. The thing about built in filters is that the reviews say they are pretty loud. I can still hear the aqua clear, but my kids swear that it doesn't bother them.

I dont think age really plays a large part in it, its more or less when you feel like they have reached an understanding of responsibility. Dont actually think its a great idea to give a kid a fish tank and let em slowly kill/torture a fish to death cuz they dont know how to take care of it but then again I guess we have all been in those shoes at some point...
