Upgraded to Finnex Planted+ pls help w/dosing

I just got my Finnex Planted+ for my aqueon evolve8. It is MUCH brighter then the stock light, so I am a little worried about getting algae.

The tank is 12" tall and my substrate is 3" thick. I've reduced the photo period from 8hrs down to 6hrs. I was dosing Flourish comp. 1x per week, and Flourish excel 2x per week. No injected C02.

Since I've increased the light intensity, shouldn't I have to increase my dosing of ferts?, and if so, what and how often do I increase it to?.

How long should I stick with the 6 hrs photoperiod, before I can increase it back up to 8 hrs.?

Idk man, I don't think I'd do a planted + without co2 on a short tank (not unless you raised the light a little)

I'm with HybridHerp. I think you'll need to add CO2, or raise the light, or put some window screen over the light to dim it down some, or else I'm pretty sure you're going to constantly be fighting algae.

I would definitely not run a planted + without CO2. I had a planted + on the rim of a 5.5g with co2 injection and still constantly fought algae, the light should have been raised.

Thank you for your responses.
How soon should I expect algae?, because there is no sign of it after a week with the current set-up.
I did increase my dosing schedule to: .5 ml of Excel every day, .5 ml Comp 2x per week. The light runs 3.5 hrs on, 3 hrs. off, 3.5 hrs on. Plan to bump it up to 4 hrs increments after another week.

You can slowly bump the excel up to 3-4x daily dose, weekly increases for example. That should help a good bit with algae, plants too.

Don't listen to em. I have the same setup just not an evolve. Cut your lights to 6 hours them slowly increase to 8 a day. I dose the entire line of seachem. Excel, flourish , iron, pottasium, phosphorus and nitrogen and do not use co2 and have no algea what so ever. My tank is a little heavier planted than yours but the planted plus is a great light . Just keep it on a timer and get a nice pair of Otto cats and you will be fine!

Bump: I dose every Sunday for excel (don't over kill 2xs a week) with the light that's not good. Only thing I dose twice is iron because of the Alternanthera reineckii and ludwigia sp.

Thanks burr740 and NeMox69x, I was beginning to get a little worried and started wondering if hubby could fabricate some sort of "lift" for my light, that would still be aesthetically pleasing. (I'm one of those girls that likes things to look nice and neat not some "jerry rigged" make shift do-hickey.
I'll keep my fingers crossed and hope things stay nice and stable.

I ran a RayII over a 5 without co2 for a while and it was fine until one day some little aspect of the tank changed and then BOOM algae explosion.

I had to redo the whole tank, I know have the light raised

Thank you for the compliment!. The foreground plant is staurogyne repens. I've been trimming it as it grows and replanting the tops to create the carpet look It's a very undemanding plant, as I am new to the hobby and it's growing well for me!.

Nice little tank, the plants look super vibrant and healthy
I think it could us some height, maybe with a thin branch or a tall rock even. With or without moss

That light is too strong at that height without C02. Even with more ferts you need the C02 to push the plants to grow faster with that high light. Raising it a little higher should work but you might end up raising it to where the you are getting the same PAR the original light was giving your plants and thus the same light intensity.

The tank looks great btw. Whatever light you were using was working really good because I've never seen s. repens grow that well without the C02. What was the reason behind changing the lights in the first place?
