mixing sand and oil dry?

hi, I have a 180 gallon full of sand but no plants yet as I am not ready. but I have been worried that my plants will not flourish as much in sand as they would in other plant subs. I will be adding osmocote root tabs but sand has no CEC so that's got me thinking that it will be hard for the plants to get to the nutrients. my idea is if I could mix in a little oil dry to the sand to give it some CEC to hold the nutrients from the root tabs. I would only mix it in the areas that are going to have plants and the sand/oil-dry ratio would be something like 7/3. would this work and help my plants? I have a turtle but he does NOT dig. he just walks around the bottom.

thasnks
