Mom's Spec V

“You have too many tanks we have to take care of when you aren’t around”. So what’s her answer to that? “I saw this on sale and got it for myself for mother’s day”. I don’t think she fully realizes what she just got herself into.

One confused son later, and we have this so far

Its…not the best looking thing in the world. But I firmly believe it will get there in time, and that I have laid down the foundations for this to be a pretty nice looking tank once things fill in more. Of course, fish will be added, and some plants may be removed or replaced, but so far this is what it is. And it has a LOT of growing to do.

This tank may also be the closest I come to doing anything iwagumi-eque for a long time. Idk, the openness isn't my style but its my mom's tank so I will try to make it as lush as possible. Probably will come off as more of a iwagumi meets nature style meets "lolwhatisscaping" style.

Here are the specs on this so far:
• Current Inverts
• Planorbis arnoldi – “Mini Ramshorn Snail” x#

• Plants
• Marsilea crenta
• Aegagropila linnaei – “Moss Ball”
• Staurogyne repens
• Ludwigia sp. ‘Red’
• Ceratopteris thalictroides – “Water Sprite”
• Bolbitis heudelotii – “African Fern”
• Microsorum pteropus var. ‘Windelov’
• Bucephalandra sp. “Mini Belinda”
• Filtration - Stock
• Heater – some small thing I have to set once I get a thermometer for this tank
• Lighting – Stock (and I hate it, I’m going to convince my mom to replace it with some other LED)
• Substrate - ADA Amazonia
• Hardscape - Ryuoh Stone

As you can see, I wanted some nice things for my mom’s tank. So far, the frustration is coming from the lack of lighting intensity from that stock LED. Even she seems convinced that she should get a better light for this tank at some point. I’m thinking either that clip on fugeray with red LED’s (but idk if it will have enough spread to really get the whole tank nicely) a straight up fugeray, or ideally the satellite plus since that seems fun and gets the PAR. Its just a little more expensive than the other options. I don’t think the planted+ is worth it for this tank though, as I feel that might have too much PAR for such a small tank, and I don’t see my mom doing co2 injection on this.

My pal MonsterFish has some Badis badis he can rehome so I might either take a pair or a single male for this tank, as that seems like it would have the blue in it that my mom would appreciate. I have also been told that a single male might work out with a few nano schooling fish, but I will see.

And incase anyone is wondering, the buce is here, inbetween the stones. It will look cooler once the buce grows out more…however long that takes.

I dumped my stock light and got an 18 inch finnex ray 2. Once I modded the canopy, it fit perfectly over the tank and lights it all evenly. However if your mom isn't doing co2 and fert, the fugray might be a better choice.

Looks really nice though

Guess lol

As far as lighting yah, it's either the fugeray, the clip on, or the satellite plus.

I really want a better light for this thing :\

Soon, I'm slowly convincing my mother into putting in a little extra money into her tank for that. I removed the L. Red because it wasn't looking good with this lighting amount. I might return it to the tank if the lighting is upgraded but, I'm slightly leaning towards letting it be and just keeping the few species in here to do what they do.

The buce is growing though, which is cool, so that will be fun to see how that looks when its a nice thick carpeting in-between the stones. Also added a sub-adult male Badis badis that I got from MonsterFishKeeper, and the thing looks nice, I'll show a pic later on. I want to get some assassin snails for this tank as well as a small school of some nano sized schooler (micro rasbora species or those vietnam white clouds or something along those lines).

This is more or less the closest to an iwagumi I'm getting maybe ever lol I might play around with the use of the windelov fern, I might instead put in some needle or just leave it be. May also add more dime sized marimo balls because I kinda like how they look in a small iwagumi like layout.

14? at first I thought you were an adult but it kinda sounds like you are a teenager the way you are talking about your mom.

Can I guess? I'd say you're in college and living at home, so probably around 20.

Spot on, although I just turned 21. I normally live on campus though so that makes this hobby an interesting balancing act. But it's been (mostly) working.

Ima give you a warning now. Being 21 is nice an all but it doesn't drastically change your world. It's more about what you get to be able to do that's nets you that independence.

Also, I've spent more than my mom spent on the tank itself already setting this up between the stones/plants/fish/aqua soil. It's not up to me to splurge on her project, just to help her keep it looking nice and running lol

I spend too much on my other tanks anyways. This hobby is a great way to go broke.

Yep. I'm only 23 and my tanks have taken at least a grand out of my wallet lol. Gives me something to do and a great sense of satisfaction when things work out.
Interesting to see so many younger people on here - kind of thought everyone was way older than me.

I like the scape on this tank - should look real good once it fills out in the middle.

So I measured the par in this...at the substrate it's a solid 10.

Guess who needs a fugeray?

Time to spend money . That's kinda depressing how fluval sells LEDs that aren't really strong enough to grow many plants at all...

Yah, but I guess its because fluvial doesn't design these packages specifically for plant growth. Aquatic plants still aren't exactly a mainstay or commonplace when it comes to all of fish keeping...at least not doing it well anyways.

I will bet it will be soon considering what a normal fish tank person considers awesome compared to what we consider awesome . most normal fish tanks look barren after you have been in this hobby and most fish tank keepers never go back after they have seen the pure awesomeness that a planted tank can be.

Very true. It wasn't until I actually looked up the word aquascape a couple of years back that I really realized that the way I've been taking care of fish just seemed so....incomplete haha.

Within those two years, I've gained more knowledge about fish and plants than I have my whole life.

How's college suiting you Hybrid? I'm sure it's just loads of fun when you're not working with your plants . I know I'm having a great time.
