Overbaffled Spec II?

Hi all,

Just rebooted my Spec II to make room for a beautiful new halfmoon betta fish I got.
I've used the Spec for a betta before so I know the filter flow can be a bit much for them to handle so I took to baffling it.

Originally, I cut the outflow hose to reduce flow, but my betta still seemed to struggle and ended up against the slits on the top part of the filter. Afraid he would damage his fins, I but a large sponge piece in there to block some of the suction.

Then, to stop him from getting thrashed around the tank, I've put a sponge on the outflow.

Now my water is pretty much still, I can see a film developing on the top of the tank, and I'm not sure what to do.
Any advice? He's super happy--has a few bubble nests going and everything!

thanks!
