I was wondering if people could give me some help, for a theoretical test of knowledge that ALL fishkeepers should know. This is for a school project, where I am writing a program that tests ones knowledge of fish and hence awards them with a 'fish licence'. (a slightly stupid idea I know...but it is only theoretical).

So can anyone give me some good ideas about what sort of questions I should inculde in my test? I am planing to have a lot and give them to the victim (person being tested) randomly.

(email me at if you have any good ideas, or just post them...thanks)

You could ask about how to test dimensions of a tank. the relationship between KH and PH, how to work out the watts per gallon rule. what size filter you need for a given size tank, how much heating you use. How many fish for the tank and what sort of plants should go in the tank.

watts per gallon may be a little hard core for a fish test!

Questions like 'how many fish per gallon', 'where do you find information about fish compatibility' (since it would be too much to test specific fish species), 'what do you do to treat water', etc...o yes, have alot on the nitrate cycle (like what it's actually called, which I would fail at this point!).

Yes, everyone should know about the cycling of a new tank. What are the most important things to test for at first (ammonia, ph, nitrites). Ask about what they should know about a fish before they buy it. Give scenarios like: "Hey that oscar is soooooo cute, I'll but him and put him in my 10 gallon tank!" Is that a good idea?

I think we need to know what age group we are targeting here.

Do fish need oxygen? are bubbles necessary in an aquarium?
Do fish sleep? do they need darkness?
Do fish have ears? do they hear? how?
Can a fish be a vegatarian?
There is some sort of fish food you can buy that is appropriate for every sort of fish -- true or false?
Fish are happiest in pairs, one boy and one girl -- true or false?
