I've observed a handful of grey hairy "hay stacks." they are very triangular, that is originate at a point on some plant leaves, and expand to an inverted cone shape of ~10 little hairs. Each instance is only about 1/8 to 1/4 inch wide/tall. What is this?

It sounds like staghorn algae to me, I had it for a while. I'd take that with a grain of salt though, I'm far from the most experienced person here. I had it while going through my new tank syndrome, before my nutrients balanced out. Very tough to remove, nothing in my tank would eat it. Once things balanced out, it dissapeared.

I had something very similar for a while. The ones in my tank were quite green, however, and attached themselves VERY firmly to individual pieces of gravel only. I never saw one on a plant. Maybe it isn't the same species you have. But, like lgorbaty, mine went away after things balanced out.
