I am thinking of either buying Coral Lifes Freshwater AQualight 130 WATT and use my old 40 WATT with it or should I but the 260 WATT version of the Aqualight for my 55 gallon tank?

I want my tank to grow goos plants and there will be CO2, but Im wondering is 260 WATTS needed or will 170 WATTS be enough with CO2 for a very good planted tank?

I think 170 is fine.

I grow just about anything really well with 160 watts on my 55 g.

I am no expert but I would say that's lots. Basically you will have 2 watts per gallon of power compact light and 1 watt per gallon of normal fluorescent light. That's plenty in my books.

170 is plenty and mabey reaching too much imo. You will definately need CO2.

I wouldn't call it 'too much'...but yes, you'll need some kind of CO2 system, or you'll have massive algae issues.

Thats lots of light so you should be fine. There is no "yes" or "no" answer to this.. it all depends on your plants.

Remember that the WPG rule is only a guide, however 170 watts over 55 gallons is three watts per gallon, you should get great growth and be able to grow anything you want. At this level thought you will need CO2, either pressurised or DIY.

If you feel that three watts is not enough you could get two units.

Anyway why not see how it goes and buy with a view to adding another unit later?
