Do you have your tank cover under your lighting or are your bulbs open to the water for maximum light transmission?

My tanks are open top tanks with the light fixtures on stands that lift them about 4" above the top of the tank. This way I have no loss of Light, although I have heard if you use a glass cover the loss of light is very little. But I also like my plants to grow out of the water.

I use glass covers...other wise I have too much evaporation. Plus several of my fish are known jumpers.
as long as you clean the glass tops so mineral deposits don't form and block the light you shouldn't be losing any.
