Changing Substrate

I want to change my substrate, I currently have the Tetra Complete substrate and i feel like it's just stopped working none of my plants are growing and i want to re-scape my tank (i have a 125l)

how should i go about changing my substrate and more importantly what to?

I've heard that ADA Aquasoil is good but I have read some reviews which say it's not that good, if I did buy that how much would I need and do I need to cap it?
or are there any better substrates?

P.S. I know generally know the more you pay the better it tends to be (but not always this is true)
but I can't really afford to spend too much on money on it

Any help would be appreciated thanks in advance!

Since this is a US-based forum, it would help to know the dimensions of your tank. In cm at least, inches preferred by most. The size of your tank will determine how much substrate you need to buy, obviously.

Before getting too deep, a few questions:

How long has the tank been set up?

Any livestock?

Lighting? What's you photoperiod?

How are you fertilizing you plants?

Important to note about Aquasoil: You couldn't switch to that if you have any critters in your tank, as it'll need to go through the initial ammonia cycle.
