Some how I have missed the fact I'm planning on laying 5" of substrate. Should I do 1 1/2" dirt 1/2" gravel 1/2" sand?

Why use gravel at all? I would do 1 inch dirt and about 1.5 - 2 inches of sand. The gravel will eventually just pop up all over the place, and if you think it will help hold down the soil it really won't matter. The best way to avoid a mess is to plan before you scape and then don't uproot anything hehe.

Not the aqueon brand. Usually they are better tanks That are derimmed. It has stopped but those marks are where the silicone is no longer adhering to the glass and may let go at some point down the road. Other tanks of the same brand may also hold up due to a better silicone job at the factory.

UPDATE Feb,2:

So i purchased another aqueon 20g long and plan on not de-rimming it.
I purchased two bags of fine grain Eco-Complete as i dont want to worry about algae with a dirted tank especially just starting out.
I am waiting for my DIY co2 to show up in the mail this week and plan on starting the aquascape and planting HC.

Sorry I didn't notice you asked which other brand of aquarium to get. Miracles makes nice tanks and they're located in Canada. There are other brands, but of course when push comes to shove I forget all the good names....smh
