Cool

Finnex FugeRay Planted+ Before and after

Skip to the 3nd paragraph if you don't want the whole story. Just statistics.
How the planted tank itch started with me. I had a lonely Amazon sword no matter what I did to it, it would not grow or really die. It only seemed to like it when I opened the windows and let nature light my tank. Let me tell you, the Algae was insane. So, no more of that. I first had 1 CFL (compact florescent bulb) over a 29 gallon with sunlight filtering in through the curtains. Then a hood with a single florescent tube, which looked terrible and did nothing for the plants unless them were floating. So, a while back I posted about the best light for under $100 bucks. http://www.plantedtank.net/forums/sh...137&highlight=

Well, I came across how so many in this family (Planted Tank Community) had Finnex Rays or Furgerays and then thought to myself. I want one too! So, for Christmas I blew all my Giftcards on getting myself a nice light.
I got the NEW Finnex Fugeray Planted +. Its for plants, Its LED, and the LEDS go all the way to the end of the fixture. So, here I will post pictures of my plants before and after. These plants came from a 5 gallon holding tank, a 5 gallon Aquarius. It the one I had on hand with a cover and had the best/newest bulb. So, these plants are in OK condition. Lets see what this baby can do! Here are the stats.

Statistics:

Tank Size 29 Gallon Aqueon Standard

Light: 1 Finnex Fugeray Planted +

Substrate: Flourite Sand with a nice layer of Tahitian Moon Sand Black

Filter: Currently cycling on my other 29 Gallon tank, almost done! Aquaclear 70

Fauna: Nothing yet, waiting until the filter is moved over and then popping them in there. 3 Glodanios they poop enough for an elephant. and will make sure the cycle stabilizes.

Plants: 1 I believe Anubias, 25-30 Crypts (Lutea, cypt parva, Bronze, Wendtii, Spiralis), 1 Amazon sword plant, Marsilea Crenata, Java moss, Water wisteria, Hygro of somekind, Several stems of something given to me ?

Date started: 01/11/14
Picture to be added once the sand settles and you can actually see something. Stay tuned!

Yes, I realize that this tank is in a closet. My tank stand that I bought for it was commandeered by the TV.
I also forgot to mention the FERTS.

FERTs: There are between 6-8 API fert tabs and 4-5 Root Tabs From Peabody Paradise tucked into the substrate. I also did an initial dose of 10 ML of Flourish Comp. I will Dose weekly.

Why do I have water in the tank? Because Crypt LOVE to melt, I just got them to grow back in this new water. I also made sure to use water from water changing my other tanks. I also plan to squeeze my nasty Sponge filters from my Shrimp tanks into here. Lots of good stuff. I have 5 days before I add the filter and fish. I have had the filter on the tank for about 2 1/2 today. I know I will have to test, but this will be a Planted tank WITH fish, not a fish tank with plants. I have breeding tanks for that.

Glad to hear you're enjoying your new light. Finnex makes some nice LED fixtures, so that was a wise investment.

So will the tank remain permanently in the closet?

The tank will be moved in a couple months when I can afford another stand. I just moved house, and the stand was bought for the Finnex tank, but My hubby liked the stand for the TV better. He supports my fish habit so, there you go. I may get the stand back, but right now, Hubby says it matches our bedroom furniture. It does, because I wanted it to, so I could have 1 in the bedroom and 1 in the living room.

Default Update 1-21-14

I have notices a few crypts melt. They were moved to this tank, so yeah I expected that. I did notice the day I flooded the tank, when it was only filled to an inch. The crypt Spiralis, actually rose above the water a full inch and half. I forgot to take a pic, Sorry. Here are the Pictures from today. I even took a picture of the stuff floating in the tank, the plants mainly with too short root/no roots. I have been dosing every 3 days Flourish comp. Enjoy.

Where did you purchase your Finnex Planted + from? I'm researching options for my 29g too and it seems like the Ray 2 requires a lot more commitment (algae, CO2 etc etc) for just starting out. I'd like to ease into plants a bit slower and this seems like a great option.

Sorry, about the updates. I haven't really been paying attention, LIFE got a little in the way. Sorry about the cloudiness I am doing an experiment with fish poop.

Check out the Crypt Spiralis in the Pictures, It was maybe 2-3 1/2 inches when I got them. They are now more than 9 inches, the swords were tiny TINY, and now after pruning the BAD leaves they have exploded. Once they get to a good size they will be rehomed. As you can see I got a couple more plants, I got 2 packs of Crypt Undulata Red from Petsmart in those little gel packs. THERE WAS TONS IN EACH PACK. I had to put some in another 2 tanks! There was atleast 20+ plants in each pack.

I have been dosing the plants HEAVY with Flourish comp liquid and having the lights on for 8-12 hours. I did have to move the Dwarf clover because I think it need to be RIGHT under the light for best PAR. It was ok, but I wanted to see how it would do under this light. THIS LIGHT IS AMAZING!! The Crypt Spiralis looks amazing. I plan on getting Crypt Balansae next, I am trying to get a forest going for my CPDS.

The SWORDS ARE OFF!

Looking better now! I have a Finnex Ray II on my tank and I've been thinking about getting the planted + because I thought that the red LEDs would be of better use to the tank.

The good thing is this Tank from the the beginning I only USED 1 Planted plus fixture to see how it would do. I hope this helps people, one note because this is only 1 fixture. I would have and LOW to the ground plants, (foregrounds) in the middle of the tank to keep them low. I did accidentally notice I did not have the fixture on the middle of the tank, fixed that. So, I might move a couple nodes of Dwarf clover to the front again.
