Evolve 2 - First Planted Tank Journal

So, when I first started this tank I really had no idea what I was doing. I still don't. But now that I've decided to go full NPT and I'm a couple weeks in, I just became aware that I'm going to have to move the tank in December.

For that reason, and others, I'm going to be doing a full replanting sometime soon. I want to replace the dirt and soil cap (which I don't like anyways - white sand does not suit it) with stratum, and I'll be moving a few things around. I just think it will be more manageable in a tank of this size.

But for anyone curious, here's the current setup:

Tech:
Aqueon Evolve 2
Fluval 13W light
Miracle gro + sand cap substrate
Stock filter, plus a heater
Very occasional liquid CO2
Very occasional dosing of ferts (I still don't really get how/how much to dose in a super small tank)

Plants:
cryptocoryne, ludwigia repens, marimo moss ball, hornwort, duckweed, sunset hygro

Fish:
Male betta fish, some pond snail hitchhikers

This is about 2 weeks in - please excuse the detritus, it's due for a clean up but I've been lazy!

Cute betta! Did you make mods to the filter or do the plants break out the current enough for your betta?

Thanks! No, the plants definitely don't break the current enough. I emailed Aqueon complaining about the misrepresentation of the tank on the box (i.e. "use this tank for bettas!" when the filter makes it completely unusable), and they sent me a weaker pump. I also cut some holes in the tube (though that didn't really do much), and I have a fluval prefilter sponge over the spray nozzle.

Lately, though, Romeo's fins have been looking a bit ragged and I think it's because he's taken to resting against the intake at night. I'm going to get some mesh and put it overtop, so his fins can't be sucked in.

I have an Evolve4, no betta yet still trying to figure out scape and get that done first. I did something very simular to you for filter mods but also added foam over the pump intake to keep it from sucking in anything that can clog it.
I have some foam over backside of the intake slots but I like your idea of using mesh, I might try that ^^

Oh I forgot to mention that I have a course sponge over the backside of the intake too, but it does very little for current and I don't think it's significantly helping my boy's fins.

If you're going to be getting a long-finned betta I would recommend putting a pellet/flake of his food on the surface of the water with the filter on. If it moves in any significant way, the current will be too strong.
