The stuff I have been using is non-clumping. After rinsing it with water it has a texture like flourite, but with a gray/greenish color. No clumps, no mush at all. There must be different types for sale. It should be the non-deodorized, non-clumping sort. Rex has found "Special Kitty" that turns to mush, so I guess it depends on the area of the country where you get it...

I think Wal-mart sells two types of "Special Kitty" litter, both clumping and non-clumping. I think the stuff I bought came in a red bag, but it's been a long time. I do know that it didn't clump when I rinsed it out.

The success with CPA is going to really depend on luck. You could buy two bags of the same thing and have good luck with one and bad luck with the other. CPA is a very inexpensive commodity item and is going to be highly variable in quality and source. I have sampled several bags here in the Northwest and have yet to have one that did not turn to mush.
