I have an underwater filter and due to this my plants have been suffering as I think the underwater filter is taking all the nutrients from the roots is there anyway to stop this??

Thanks.

Hi,
Do you mean a undergravelfilter ? If so you will soon encounter problems. These aren't recommended for planted tanks as the plant roots will soon block the filter plates and stop it from working.

yep, buy a new filter. Either a internal or external, depending on your requirements. Run both filters together for a week or two, then you can either remove the undergravel filter plates or just remove the uplift tube and powerhead/airstone.

Or, if none of that sounds good...just stick with stem plants, these won't root and obtain their nutrients directly from the water column.

Thanks for your reply

it is piranhas in the tank so it is recomended that I keep the under gravel filter I was told possibly small baskets to keep the roots in would help but I was wondering if there was an alternative? Sorry what do you mean by stem plants? Its probably handy you mentioned that the plants roots might block the filter as I never thought about that.

Thanks for your help.

Your piranhas will do fine with a canister filter.

I know they're piranha but don't let them eat your muscles
Mussels will be fine though...

Anyway...a UGF is highly effective in a fish only system, but a canister is even better, especially if you have plants.
I have books that say UGFs are the best, and I have books that say never ever use a UGF...
The best advice you will get is from a forum such as this, as you will get advice from people who have tried and tested many different methods.
