Purigen and Baking soda
When regenerating purigen, can you buffer it using baking soda?
In my chemistry class, one rule of thumb was the throw baking soda onto a surface in which a base or acid was spilled. Or to mix the baking soda with water to make it pasty and apply it to yourself where you got hit. And baking soda is a salt. So, wouldn't the baking soda neutralize the purigen ENOUGH that a good rinse will take out problems? |

Why would you want to use that? The process uses bleach to refresh the media then an acid to neutrilize bleach which is a base. Where would the bicarb come into play. Bicarb is a weak base.

Hmm come to think of it, nevermind!!! Na won't bind with OH :-D.
Then why did my teacher say put baking soda to neutralize any kind of spill? I precisely remember wondering WHY the hell it worked on both bases and acids. Why does it work in the lab then? or is my teacher being kooky. |

All baking soda would do is raise kH. Baking soda is a good buffer in a lab setting because it is a very weak base. That is all there is to it. However, it would do nothing for purigen.
