hey man your tank looks nice! Are you talking about the red plant? Oh hey I have a question. So you put the Cfl bulbs in the stock hood? and the black diamond sand, is that the stuff from Home Depot?

Is 2 13w cfls enough light tho? i was thinking putting the 23 w cfls. and did you remove the splash guard or are they still in?

Sorry for all the question. I am thinking about setting up my old 10 gallon tank lol

Its depend but its working for me with all of my current plants and such other low light demanding plants ( the lights are 2300k btw, i will try 5500-6500k soon). As you can see, most of my plants are stem and their roots are sucking the dirt so that's their main source of nutrition ( except the moss though). I did not remove the splash guard but added foil paper. Here is an inside picture.

I have never worry about that. This manufactured hood came with crappier light bulbs and it was running for months. This is spiral bulbs so even in case water evaporates to the top, it wont harm the lights at all. Fact, it's been set up like that for a year and never see any problem with the lights and water. The lighting system is actually higher than the water surface like 2' or so by the way.

I'm a fan of the the 9w 6500k CFL bulbs. They produce a lot less heat than the 13w and give plenty of light for low to med light plants. When I ran the 13's I had mad algae without co2. Just my experience though.

I had green algae on my front glass for 2-3 weeks. Cleaned them up front but left the other 3 side because i want to leave some for my shrimps. Now i rarely see algae on the front glass. I don't have co2 in here but dosing EI once or twice a week if i ever remember.

A little update on my 10 gallon tank 10/27/13
- Moved the Stargrass to have more open space in the front glass.
- Added more Dwarf baby tears from my 55 gal since they were dying in there. Shrimps love these.
- Removed the heater since i dont use it.
- Trimmed the creepy golden jenny and moss.
- Shrimps are having baby everyday i watch.

An update on my "well aged" 10 gallon. Things are pretty much stay the same, i just got the diy co2 hooked up in this tank, wont be running yet but soon. The reason why i want to inject co2 in here because i start seeing new growth from the hc, so i decide to clear things out to test if it can grow well in here !
Here is before the "clear"

After removed the creeping jenny and replant some of the floating hc.

The same colony of 25 rcs 2 months ago ( i did sell off about 20 though) but still, there are lots of them, at least 15+ berried

An update on my 10 gallon.
The tank is pretty much stay the same. I have not done water change for 2 weeks but topping off. I actually wanted to have a carpet of either glossostigma or hc but it seems like the moss has founded it way down there. I dont mind that either. Im just added a little diy co2 in there to see how the plants and shrimps react. I dose dry fert once or twice but it seems like everytime i did that, the gsa grows faster on the front glass. The stargrass looks extremely nice shaped to me in this tank as the leaves are sightly shaper and greener. All in all, after the cold ill have my first batch of shrimp shipped out !

I like how you've stuck with the hut, heh. It seems you have an infestation. Lucky you
