Iron and Red

I want to dose a little extra iron in my tanks bc I have some species that are red.

Questions: Is this a good idea or a waste? Should I dose dry or liquid iron? Would a liquid fert like API leaf zone which is iron and potash be better, since I'm also supplementing potassium that way (although I do dose NPK)? Lastly, amount?

Thanks If i find any info in my research ill post

I dose API leaf zone. Works well for my red melon sword. Even in low light i get new growth thats nice and dark red. It's always best to put laterite under your substrate as plants pull iron mostly from their roots. But liquid/dry ferts work. Dry ferts are cheaper than liquid.

from the looks of it, iron dosing seems futile, especially since there is some in CSM + B (which I dose)

do you dose the leaf zone along with anything else?

(My routine is 2 weekly doses CSM + B, 1 dose NPK, daily excel)

LeafZone is dirt cheap online. I would get a bottle or two and try it for a month - your plants will tell you if it's a waste or not. I would dose it on 2 other days.

I dose weekly. It's a low tech tank. And I dose seachem comprehensive. I'll dose other seachem ferts if I need to.

OVT is right. It's dirt cheap so worth a try and see if it helps your colors

Keep in mind there's not a ton of iron in CSM+B. Dosing extra iron (or mixing it in with your micros mix if you do premade solution) can be quite beneficial in most cases, especially if you have an iron deficiency.

Good nutrient levels for plants = healthy, red plants if the species is red and the proper conditions are met.

Might be cheaper to just buy chleated iron off somewhere like GLA vs buying the aforementioned API Leaf Zone.

I enrich CSM+B (which only has EDTA Fe) with DTPA Fe (4:1 ratio) from GLA as well as a daily dose of Ferrous Gluconate (Flourish Iron). Not that my low-tech setup really needs it, but things do look better with the DTPA and I want to learn a method that translates to higher-tech/fast-growing setups.

I was going to start my own thread on iron but guess this one is close enough...

I already dose csm+b but the iron content is miniscule. So I'm thinking about chelated Fe tabs.

Have you guys tried iron tabs?

I found two sources online with somewhat different ingredients..

This seems like the better buy (scroll down to iron pellets):

http://www.aquariumplants.com/AquaFe...TEM_p/fert.htm

Then there's these that are just iron rich clay with chelated iron:

Thoughts?
