Aquarium imports in Hoover is mostly saltwater, but he does have some freshwater fish and sometimes the hard to find ones. His plants are mostly covered with BBA algea.

The bba in those tanks have been my biggest deterrent on purchasing from them. I have seen cherries at Aquarium imports and at Pet supply plus in Hoover. I am very pleased with the plants I've ordered through Bama plants. I'm in Brierfield and have found it better to order my livestock through the forum/online than driving into Hoover.

Thanks for the replies Semperfish and Sourgrl. I live pretty close to the Pet Supplies Plus in Pelham I will check them out. In times I've been in there before they seem understaffed and not very educated on fish, so I was kind of turned off. I'm in the process of stocking my 40 gal tank with fish and have been buying them from Petsmart as they have an awesome sale going until 4/21. The neon tetras and glowlight tetras I've been buying are only $1. Also been buying some ghost shrimp when in stock for $0.30 each. I would like some Java moss to go with the anachris I already have to help clean and oxygenate the water some. Semperfish, you said you purchased some Java Moss before, did it grow well? Any tips? Do you think it helps clean/oxygenate the water? I've heard that shrimps love it so thought it would be good for the ghost shrimp. Also, what about those marimo moss balls, are they any good? I've read they do better with more light so I was kinda staying away from them as I have lower light for the tetras. Thanks again,

Dolfan

I've got java moss in a couple tanks, no equipment. The moss and the tank inhabitents (blue velvets & ghost shrimp) are doing really well. I got mine through aquabid because I have not been able to find it, or any moss, locally. I see it in the s&s forum rather regularly. I don't think the marimo balls really do anything beneficial for a tank other than house more beneficial bacteria. Good pickings for shrimps. I have them in my tanks simply because I like the way they look.

Anyone have any info, do people still check this post, it looks a little old?

I would also be interested in talking with locals about any good stores and sharing info/ideas.
Thanks,

I have a tank that's being overrun with java moss...I'll be more than happy to part with some

I am new to the forum. I live in Tuscaloosa and work in Birmingham. I have a 55 gallon tank with about 25 cory cats (I started with 2), 2 plecos and 5 amazon swords which I have had for about 5 years. I also have a 56 gallon column tank which I am hoping to start adding plants to in the coming weeks.

New Guy here too, just came on to the forum as suggested by JMHART. Anyhow, I'm in Tuscaloosa too, very familiar with Bham, lived there my whole life until three years ago. Also a 55 gallon tank, just set it up after it was stored for ten years, upgraded the lighting a bit. First time with plants, JMHART got me started with a bag full of Nana Anubias, Needle Leaf Java Fern, and just a little Wendi Cryptocoryne. Going to be low tech for the foreseeable future, but looking to add some more Crypts and maybe moss and then I don't know what.

Good forum though.

9 Neons too, for now(had ten, but everyone knows how that goes). Want my next addition, after plants, to be Otos and Corys, and finally more Neons and possibly some other small Tetras.

Welcome to the plantedtank Curt. I'm in the Birmingham area and also have a 40 gallon breeder. I have cherry shrimp, neon tetras, a bristelnose pleco, few otos, and some Malaysian trumpet snails. As for plants I keep hornwort, frogbit, java moss, java fern, bacopa, water wisteria, and some rotala. The Alabama section doesn't get a whole of action but maybe we can get it going.
