my sword tails and guppies keep haveing babys however most of them get sucked up the filter if i dont put a fine mesh net over the intake of the hang ons but then i have to clean it daily or the filter will not suck any water up how would i filter the tank in a planterd setup and still allow them to live. i want them to live, my lfs gives me a pretty good credit for them(enough to pay for new fish, plants and so on)

what kind of mesh were you using? try a prefilter sponge. that shouldn't clog as easily. or if you're getting good credit for them, just syphon the fry out and put them in a grow out tank.

I put a coffee cup in a mesh bag (to hold the bag open), took off the filter intake strainer, put the coffee cup in the bag under the open intake tube so the tube was down inside the cup and tied the bag tightly around the tube to make a kind of tee-pee. It gives a lot of surface area for the water to flow through and doesn't clog hardly at all. I used the coarser mesh bag, not the really fine mesh.
Hope it works for you... Tim
