Catalina 3 Bulb T5HO Question.

I Have noticed in alot of pics and videos that some folks have there lights set pretty close to the top of the water... I have my Light 4 1/2" off the water. Is that considered too low? I only run 2 Bulbs of 6700k for 8 Hrs, and a Plant grow bulb for an hour and a half a day starting at 3PM. the Lights run from Noon to 8:00PM..

I actually was running a 4 bulb oddysea T5HO and A 2 bulb Aquaticlife T5HO for a total of 6 bulbs for ten hours on my 75 gallon tank. The results were awesome when it was thriving... I switched and things are not the same. Do I need more light?

Dosing EI Dry Daily.
Press Co2

I ran the same fixture on my 75 for a few years. I did something similar where I had 2 bulbs for 8 hours and all three for like 2 or 3 hours. With pressurized Co2 it was thriving. So if 6 bulbs was working well for you why did you go to 3?

6 bulbs on a 75 is overkill for a freshwater tank. There are some good threads on this forum discussing PAR value and comparing various fixtures. May be worth your time to check into them. I believe those threads will show that 2 T5 bulbs with a Catalina fixture put you in the high light category.

I have the Catalina 3 bulb T5HO on my 75. Check it out by clicking the link in my signature. 3 bulbs is more than enough light on any 75 gallon. I also dose dry ferts using EI dosing and have pressurized Co2. There isn't a plant I cannot keep and have thrive in my tank. I have two bulbs on 9 hours and the third bulb on for about 5 hours. All lights are off for a rest period between 2pm and 4 pm.

I'm not sure what is so different about my tank. Perhaps I need to replace my bulbs in my Catalina fixture. I have all 3 T5HO 6700K on for about 11 hours a day and a 48" Plant Gro Bulb for 2 hours and I have zero algae. I do dose 14ml of Metricide daily. I use the Plant Gro bulb only when I'm home for the extra colors it shows in the fish
