Guidance appreciated- first planted beta tank - Separated 10 gal

Hi, thanks for clicking..
I'm trying my luck at a planted tank again now that I'm moved out and on my own, I followed this article and kind of DIY-ed a tank separator on my 10 gallon.
http://www.tropicalfishkeeping.com/d...ividers-21866/

It's been a couple months and this is the tank currently:

I have only four types of plants in the tank at the moment:
Rotala rotundifolia
Asian Ambulia
Some kind of Crypt, not sure
And another plant that I'm not sure the ID of, but looks like "narrow leaves microsorum"
Here's pics of the two I'm unsure of:
Plant 1

Plant 2

I want to get more plants but I'm having a weird clear-slime cover everything in the tank, it almost looks like algae but I'm pretty sure it isn't. I keep the tank at 78 and the lights are on for only about 6 hours a day because the tank is near a window. The part of the tank without a filter has an airstone for better water circulation, but is it still not enough? Does anyone know what this slime is and how to stop it?

Sorry if the pics are weird, all I have is the camera on my phone right now.

For lighting I just have the hood that came with the tank with one 23W CFL. I only have 5k bulbs but I'm going to upgrade to better lights and a new fixture, I'm thinking I like how the clamp shop lamps look, or maybe just a desk lamp.

I have no ferts going in at the moment, I was thinking of just buying a bottle of excel because I've used it before, but I've read dry fertilizers are better but look more confusing, which is easier do you think?

Thanks for reading and any help would be appreciated, I'm very new to all this so by all means tell me what I'm doing wrong, because I'm wingin' it

You have a lot of things going on there at once. Best would be to read up on some basic plant requirements to get an understanding on what is needed and what not. Sorry this isn't very helpful, but there is some learning involved or even required, and just a bottle of excel may not be the solution.

so...cool. Thanks...it's just it seems the more I try to find information on this board the more I read things that contradict each other or are completely conditional to your specific tank. But I'm learning, very slowly. I'm just new, I'm reading as much as I have time for, but I had a few questions I was curious about. sorry.
