CO2 tank exchange programs

Does any one here participate in one near Boston or North of the city?

Make sure you shop around if there more then airgas.

Airgas near me is the most expensive.

I use Middlesex Gases & Technologies. The one near me in Framingham is primarily a welding supply shop. Their Everett location is their main headquarters as far as I understand, since the Framingham location gets their refills from there.

They were nice enough to offer me my exact tank back (a shiny new 10# aluminum CO2 tank) if I was willing to wait for it. Some places do exchange only for what's there and you end up saying goodbye to your own tank for some crappy beat up steel one.

Since you specifically asked about exchange I'll assume you don't have your own, which if you did, I'd say call ahead to see if they fill or exchange so you don't loose a nice tank.

Both Airgas and Middlesex have a bunch of locations, as does Abco.
There is a place across the street (front gate, gate 3) from Gillette (not the stadium) in Boston. Do a search for welding supplies or industrial supplies/gasses.

There are a bunch of places in the area. You have plenty of options to shop around.

Thanks everyone for their information.
I'm going to talk to a welding place in Malden right now.
As for the reason for exchanging vs filling, my experience with CO2 via paintball (since the mid 90s) I'd go with exchanging since I won't have to worry bout hydroing the tank and also if the tank isn't chilled properly you don't get a good fill.
I use to have my pb CO2 tanks filled by Tolman all the time. (South Boston by the Gillette headquarters).

Airgas in southbay USED to be $6. I did lose a brand new tank the first time I swapped though.

They went up in price, 15? last time i went.

There's also Air Gas by MIT. A few other locations scattered around Boston.
Blanchard's in Brighton USE TO do CO2. I use to get it from there as it's beverage co2 (supposedly cleaner)

I'd shop around and give a few places calls. I know each Air Gas charges different prices as well!

airgas at southbay got horrendously expensive .. they wanted $84 last time for 2 tanks ... not going there again. I went to a gas place in south boston and they still wanted $32 I think? Anyone got anything cheaper?

I exchange at Middlesex gas and it was $20 for a 5lb and $30 or so for my 20lb, which was a refill and not an exchange. I think they have a main location closer to the city. I would try them!

Quoting myself here since I needed to be a bit more specific: Airgas was an exchange, the gas place was a refill only!

Try fire extinguisher places. They were the cheapest for me (was $14 for refill) but the 3 or 4 day turn around was too inconvenient for me.
According to the brew houses, the fire extinguisher places also have the best CO2.

Once you're paid into the exchange program (basically buy a new tank from them to start), Strange Brew in Marlborough is $20 for a 5 lb exchange. Not quite Boston local.

And the problem with refill instead of exchange is pressure test expiration. I think the cyclinder pressure test is good for 2 years, then you have to pay somebody to recert the cylinder (if you can find somebody to do it). Once you're on an exchange program, the cylinder certification is all on the supplier.

Man I thought I was paying to much.
I swap out 5 lb for $13 and 20lb for $33
