Range of tolerable water conditions for cardinal tetras?

Not sure but I think cardinals are very adaptable.

"Very"? No way. They're not as delicate as most people assume, but I'd reserve the term "very adaptable" for such species as Paradise fish and danios. I hate discussing "tolerable" ranges, since that involves a spectrum of arbitrary lifespans set by the experimenter and requires lethal outcomes to find those parameters. However, wild cardinals probably would tolerate pH in the 3.5 - 7.5 range, hardness to about 12 or 14 dGH, temperature from mid-70s to mid-80s. The less extreme (except for softness), the better.

Yeah, if they survive the trip from the LFS they will proabbaly stay for a few years.

I consider 3.5 to 7.5 very broad.

I've read that when you are looking for cardinals, larger ones that were bread in captivity tend to be more adaptive.

hi aLTHOUGH i've read that cardinals are being bred in captivity in commercial fisheries, every lfs that i've been to (5+) tell me their source is wild caught....

I was al ittle worried about getting cardinals, but my lfs has the same water asmine and they had these in stock for over two weeks and looking healthy.

I bought them all (13) and so far all is good and they are acting 'normally' as far as i can tell.

I have also since boughr Rummy Noses which are possibly more fusy, but they too seem fine with bright red noses all swimming boldly at the front of the aquarium,

my parameters were:

Ph 7-0-7.2
KH 7-8
GH 12-14

Not their natural water, but they seem to have been well acclimitised and I guess thats the key.
