Scum when boiling Driftwood

What is this? I think it might be resin or sap? When It came in contact with my fingers or a paper towel it hardened, but was sticky. It also smells a lot like pine. I know softwood is bad for aquariums, but I got it at a yard sale yesterday and they guy used them in his tanks (though he said he never boiled them, he just weighed them down).

Other problem is, I don't know what piece of wood it came from. I think I can assume it's from the lighter one. Any advice, run into anything similar?

I'm not certain, but I imagine it's residule resin or sap getting driven out of the wood by the boiling process.

Best guess I have is to remove the scum, give the wood a scrubbing and rinse, and another boiling. Repeat until the wood stops generating significant amounts of foam/scum.

I'm not sure that softwood is necessarily bad (so long as it's free of sap/resin, which might be difficult), but I think it's just prone to quicker decay, so may have to be replaced in a couple years or so.

Thanks, will do. For some reason I thought softwood = never put in tank. But I guess this guy had it in his for a while, so no harm there.
