Southern Arizona's 125 Gal Planted Tank

So I'd figure I'd share my first attempt at a planted tank. While I've had different fish tanks all my life, I decided to start this planted tank.

Before I had an 55 Gal sand tank with Angels, Placos, Tiger Barbs, and gourami's. My buddy had a 125 Gal tank that he never cleaned and his wife said to get rid of the tank. Yeah for me!! I got the tank, stand, and filter for CHEAP!! Well... He had some gravel in the tank that I didn't remove and it had pond snails. After thousands of them breeded and every trick to kill them, I have embraced them.

I removed all but about 1/4 inch of sand with the snails on bottom of tank. Threw in some Miracle Gro Organic Soil, and plant gravel on top of that. What you see here is day 2 after setting it up for plants.

The plants I got from Petsmart so I'm sure they are easy to care for. They seem to be doing well for me.

I got 5 clown loaches. At least they seem to be holding their own against my snails.

What are the small green/red plants in your second pic. Thanks. I have a few that came in a tank I recently bought and havent found any pics of anything that looks like them.

It's gonna look good soon. I eventually embraced the snails too and now I love having them.

Here I thought they were Red Ludwigia Plants. I'm not good with names. I just started trying to buy a bunch of different plants.

I did start to have another issue this week. Something started to kill off my angels. First two of my new little ones and then my big angel that I've had for 4 years. All tests come back good levels in the water. Temp stays around 78-80. I have no idea what caused it. Strangely all the other fish are ok.

Tank is looking good. Sorry about your angels, I've had a few die off for what seems to be no reason also. I agree with the others, you need lots more plants. I also have a 125g I'm working on going planted, and please join the 6 foot plus club.

We have a koi nursery that I believe has some plants here in Cochise County. I thought about looking there for some bigger plants to throw in the tank.

I couldn't find your "The 6 Foot Plus Club". Did it get removed?

Default Week 3 Update

Well as far as I can tell is the tall plants on the right side are growing like weeds. The rest of the plants are really nice and green but haven't grown much larger. I do have the liquid Carbon (CO2) from PetsMart so I have been putting that in. I been afraid to put too much in because I didn't want to starve the fish of oxygen if thats possible.

Turns out I have a female gold gourami and a male blue gourami and the blue guy has been flirting with the female. I guess I made the tank natural enough the fish like it.

Week 3 Growth
