40G breeder LED hardware

Hello All,
I'm building LED fixture for my upcoming 40G breeder.
Did some research, talk to people ... I think my choice is going to be 12 LEDs
So now I need to place them on heat sink / mount them above tank.
What do you think is better choice to cool LED?

1.

This is a triple curtain rail from Ikea. $20 for 55" rail
I will need to by 2 of this rails.

2.

CPU cooler from Pentium PC. I got 14 of this aluminum 4x3x1 blocks from PC liquidator $10
Can I place 2 LED's on this heat sink? If yes what will be the spacing

Thank you!

I like the rails better but they both would work. Heatsinks seem like the cheaper option

I like the look of the rails too.... but taking a second look at them, the LED is not completely placed on the aluminum, so it wont be as efficient as the heat sink.

If you're running ~3w or less per LED, you can likely fit 3-4 on each of those heatsinks without needing a fan.

That exactly what make me look for other options.
The highest temperature of the LED base will be hanging in the air, I don't think it's going to burn LED immediately, but it will shorten LED live.

I was thinking if I can place 3 LED on each heatsink so I can have 4 heatsinks across the tank.
All LEDs are 3W.

I'd skip the rail because of the above-mentioned problem...
12 of those blocks will form a full rail across the tank.. soo I'd put 2 rows of 12 LED's 2 per block centered arranged for equal spacing l/r..
f/b spacing is your choice depending on top (Is there a split glass top ect)
The side groove's look like you could make a nice "rail system"..and if you do you can decide the number of blocks your self .. or by creative wiring add (if less than 3x12) or subtract as you deem fit..

OPP's grooves are upside down...
Ignore that part

24 3W LED's will give you a lot of light...

I think 24 3W LED on 40 gallon it will be too much, it will start crazy algae.
Do you have 40G breeder with 24 LEDs?

Are they 3w LED's or are you running them at 3w? You generally don't run LED's at their max rating as it tends to burn them out faster. XP-G's and XT-E's (5w max rating) are normally run at 3w, etc, etc.

As a frame of reference I have 14x LEDs with 60 degree optics running at 3w each 30+ inches over a 24" x 18" footprint and I get 50-90 par at the substrate when turned all the way up.
