Shrimp in Hawaii

Planted tank,

To all Hawaii planted tank hobbiest we here on planted tank have grown to love ornamental shrimp such as cherry reds, crs, cbs, oebts, bkk, etc. For everyone to know that all these are illegal and soon enough all shrimps including feeders will become illegal or non listed. It won't even be available in your local pets stores.

Now what I have been doing since most planted tank people may know me. I will be trying to change the agriculture rule to allow these shrimp come in. Now there is a permit application and timely process to this certain rule change but I will do it for the love of the hobby. If any of the inverts enthusiast want to help get involved in this rule change please pm me.

Well, all I can say is good luck. I hope things work out. I've looked into changing import requirements for animals before and all I can say is its not easy. Before I moved back to Hawaii in 2003 I spoke to a lady in Hilo who had been trying to import a colony of tortoises into the state, the best she could do was to get them housed at the Hilo Zoo. These were a private breeding collection. She had been going though the process for a number of years before I spoke to her. I just checked with the Hilo Zoo website and these animals are still listed as on load from a private collection since 2000.

So, based upon that expereince I think, while anything is possible, chances are not great especially considering any imported shrimp could compete with the native/endemic shrimp.

Lornek,

It's worth a try. There are so many people on this island the would love for these amazing creatures to be legal. Thanks for the positive comment.

The one thing that I have is and I hope it will influence the agriculture board is several house reps. That hopefully will help. Agriculture is saying that there would have to be a moderator for these species. Someone that's willing to give them specific detail on these shrimps. Someone to be sole distributor and so on. So I hope I can get this to work

Well, yes not necessarily all shrimp. All shrimp have been banned from import for a long time. Opae ula is native/endemic so you don't import it. Feeders are neos that have been naturalized and are now found in the wild so these are not imported either. There are a couple of others that are native/endemic but you rarely see them and I don't think they're legal to sell. If ag is telling you that the feeders in the stores are anything but neos they need a wake-up call.
