speaking about water circulation, does a 150 create enough in a 20 high. I have never heard of water circulation that much, and all that I have heard about it is not to have to much in a planted tank...it must not be that important anyway.

A 150 should be just about enough for a 20g H. I'm using one on my 20g H and there aren't any stangnant locations or anything. Contrary to what your impression might be, circulation is very important in a planted tank. What you want to minimize is surface agitation, but you still want plenty of circulation. If the water is too still, the plants will use up all the nutrients available at the leaf surface and "suffocate". Having perfect water conditions with excellent nutrients in the water won't do much good if they aren't being carried to the plants, eh?

So I've got the Filstar XP2. I have a bag of lava rock. Am I supposed to put the lava rocks (once crushed) into a pouch? Or just lave them free in the basket?

What exactly does the lava rock do anyways?

Lava rock provides a large surface area for bacteria. Just like filter foam, ceramic thingies, or bioballs and stars.

How fine did you crush it? Normally you wouldn't need a mesh bag for it, there is no point in grinding it up too fine. I just have them sitting directly in the media basket.

well i haven't crushed it yet. I was asking first.
So should I not bother putting in the ceramic rings that come with it? Since they say that they are designed for promoting bacteria, or the more the better?

I think Otherwise was using lava rock because he didn't get the ceramic noodles. I would definitely use them. If you still have space afterwards, and you think it might help, you can add some lava rock to a compartment. If they are not too coarse, no need to smash them if they fit in there (maybe size of a grape?).

Thanks Wasserpest, I'm still learining all this stuff. I rememerb as a kit it was plug in the over the back filter and replace the carbon cartridge once in awhile.

So that's all the filtering these tanks really need? A couple pieces of fine and course foam, and a place for beneficial bacteria to grow?
