question regarding upgrading my light 4 my 55 gallon

Hi everyone
I am still new to the whole planted tank. I currently have a 55 gallon tank that has pea gravel for substrate low light plants and a generic plant light that I got from petsmart. I am looking to upgrade my lighting to allow me to get more plants that will thrive jnstead of just buying anubias all the time. I woukd like to save time by keeping the substrate as it is and get a better light and then add iron root tabs. My question is that will my plants thrive by doing this or would I be wasting my time and money?
Thank you
