Question

Cascade 700 established tak setup question

Hello,

I just purchased a penn plax cascade 700 for an established 55 gallon planted tank. I currently have a HOB filter. My question is, what's the best way to get the filter setup with the proper bacteria? Should I dose the tank with something? will the dosing cause an out break of algae because the tank is already established?

Thanks for the help.

I have the same cannister on one of my tanks. If you have the hob on the tank still, just run that along with the cannister, the cannister will eventually pick up its own bacterias. When I set up the cannister, I use the following setup, two blue sponge in bottom bin capped with poly fil, second bin fluval biomax ceramic bio media also capped with poly fil. You can buy a bag of poly fil from Walmart for a few bucks that will last an eternity. Just cut the sponge to size, and the ceramics will keep a thriving bacteria colony no matter how often you have to switch the media around.
