Jakes 36g Bow Front

I got GREAT deal from a member here on a 36g bow front with filter. So this is the story of another 36g.
I want to start by saying thanks to all the members for not only answering many questions but to those asking questions as well. Your help is greatly appreciated. And a special thanks to bobc4d for the great deal on the 36.

Here's the rundown:
The single t8 was replaced with 4 horizontally placed 23w cfls (5000k, 1600 lumen, on 8h per day)
Fluval 206
Black diamond substrate with 10 root tabs.
GH-50ppm (Ca-35ish, Mg-15ish)
KH-100ppm
Fluorish compressive and excel dosed daily. PMDD style. With CaCO3, and MgSO4, dosed to keep numbers up. Occasional API Fe with K.
20% weekly water changes using tap cut with RO. 1 part tap plus 6 parts RO plus 1 heaping teaspoon RO Right. And a pinch of Neutral Regulator for PO4.

And lots of fish food.
I "instant cycled" using the Fluval on my established tank for 1 week then transferring it over to the 36g without emptying it out. Added 3mls ammonia for two days in a row and it seemed good to go.

Fish:
9 white clouds
5 neon tetra
4 marble mollies
4 Amano shrimp
3 ottos that didn't make it. I'm Ready to try again.

Plants:
Hygrophila sp
Hygrophila brown(not doing well)
Rotalla
Nesaea
A sword of some type might be an aponogeton
Eleocharis acicularis (dwarf hairgrass)
Star grass
Creeping Jenny
Mayaca fluviatilis (doing poorly)

And a ss screen rolled up and covered with java moss. It started on a whim. I don't know what to do with it.

And a tiny piece of Xmas moss on top of the rock.

May 6th - just getting started

May 10th - trying out hard scape

May 20th - a different setup and more Plants

June 7th - some more plants

Please let me know what you think or if you see any problems.

Things are looking good.
Added some pogostemon helferi and a black background.
And 5 ottos doing well.

My lighting.

And the tank. Everything growing well. Hygrophila has some transparent parts and other plants are showing brown holes, but I have some ferts in the mail and hope that fixes these problems.

Nice start man. I like the petrified wood. You've done a marvelous job correcting our horrible tap water. I have an ROdi filter but with my large water changes weekly I can't imagine making that much ROdi water. Takes forever. I've got a large amount of mineralized topsoil and potash left over from setting up this tank if you ever need any. PM me if you want to trade any stems as well

Yea you gotta love our water.. I normally do weekly 7 gallon changes. But if needed I have two 7 gallon tanks. But that takes planning since I can only get 4 gallons per day with my RO system.

Thanks for the nice words. What do you have that you want to trade?
I have rotala rotundifolia, some sad looking nesea red, and myriophylium that I can trade. They come from my 25g and are somehow surviving with BA tetras and goldfish.

Just about everything in my 36 came from my 25.

Added some ludwigia, and some pearlweed. Trimmed the downoi and replanted some of the crowns. Just add CO2 with a makeshift diffuser. Reactor in the works.

I need to do something about the left side. I am just playing with plants on that side. I'm thinking either make that side darker and go with ferns, or carpet it with Xmas moss. .??

Downoi grows fast. No CO2 was used for this growth. It's sitting 20" under a 23w spiral fluorescent 6500k. Plenty of fish food and CSM+B was in use.

Started co2.
Cut up and spread out downoi. Trimmed ludwigia repens and added ludwigia rubin.
Ipad does not do the reds any justice.

very nice, it's definitely starting to take shape!

I am loving the downoi! I can't believe it grew so fast! Out of curiosity, was it from petsmart in those little gel packs? I just grabbed some from petsmart a couple days ago and it looks very similar to your first pic of it. I hope mine will grow that fast

Thanks,

Yes, the Downoi is from petsmart. I planted it in the big clumps that it came in.. I just washed out the gel as best I could and stuck it in. I cut off rosettes as they took form and replanted them.

Tank is really looking good!

It is also GREAT to see another Texan here too! You can edit your title by clicking the edit button in the bottom left corner of the original post, then IIRC you go to advanced edit tab, and correct the title from there.

Anyhow, I really like the petrified wood!!! I have thought about using it in my 40B that I am finally getting to set up this next week, IF I don't redo the stand I made!! LOL BUT with the reduced water depth in the 40B I am worried it will look out of place!

Your plants are looking very good too! I am going to look at petsmart tomorrow to see if ours has any Downoi! I have only seen Dwarf Hairgrass, Scarlet Temple, and Money wart in the Local Petsmart/Co.

I hope the tank continues to get even better than it is now!Subscribed!

Was it difficult to retrofit the cfl bulbs? Thinking of doing the same.
