CO2 Cannisters

Is it worth buying new from Amazon or just go down to Praxair or Airgas and get one there?

They will end up trading you an old beat up ugly one when you go to exchange it anyways so buying one from a gas supply shop should be a better/cheaper option.

Depending if you can find a fill or only an exchange place.

My local AirGas charges double for exchange vs refill.

Airgas in my area charges:

$97.60 for a tank. They have both Aluminum and Steel tanks.
$33.06 for the CO2 for both exchange and refill.

If you refill you have to leave the tank and they will fill it in order.

If I get a new one for $68 (
here here
) I would need to get 2. One to use and one to have as a spare for use when one is waiting in line...

It's a racket I tell ya.

I got tired of AirGas when they changed their refill policy ~6 months ago. They used to do refills on the spot.

A local TPT member led me to a hole in the wall welding supply store: refills while you wait, $12 for 5# and $15 for 10#. Even after searching for months I could not find that place myself.

Go and find a Home Brew store. The one near me sells tanks for about half of anywhere else and will fill up on the spot. They won't do an exchange, which is fine with me. They also sell some high quality regulators.

Airgas has been alright for me. ~$20 for a 5# cylinder swap, and the always make sure I get a pretty brushed aluminum tank. There aren't any shops that I know of near my house, so a slightly higher cost of the tank swap vs. refill with Airgas offsets the cost of driving in Jacksonville traffic.

guess I'm lucky about where I live. Local company 80 bucks for a filled 15# tank and $14 bucks for an on the spot refill when it's needed. When we got the tank, I was just looking for a 5#. The guy at the place said "the 5# tanks cost 70 bucks and a refill is $11" "get the 15# tank for 10 bucks more and 2 refills basically are for free" Have recommended them to everyone in my area that needs CO2. Looked at airgas here but the prices are a bit nuts.

You guys should look into fire equipment supplys. I only pay 16 dollars to fill a #5 and #2.5 at the same time.

The place I go will fill for you while you wait, but exchange is faster and cheaper. It's $20 to fill a 5lb CO2 but only $16 to exchange one. If you bring in a nice shiny aluminum tank, they set them off to the side and swap nice tanks with people that bring nice ones in, so there is zero advantage to waiting.

Bottom line, it depends 100% on where you are getting it filled/swapped.

I don't recall how much I paid at Airgas but I felt it was pretty high initially. I did have a core but it was out of date so I had to pay for the hydrotest. It didn't matter if it passed or not, I just had to pay $55 or so, if I recall. The only reason I started to use Airgas was it was really easy to deal with when I started and the main reason I continue is it's only a 2 minute drive from me now (used to be a bit of a drive).

If you are planning to exchange, I would just price it out. When I had a steal #20, I often got a tank I wasn't proud to show and my CO2 was out in the open. Sometimes they looked great, usually not so much. Now that I have an aluminum #5, they all look totally fine to me, though I care much less now that it's under my stand.

That said, I am about to hit OVT up because those numbers are 1/2 what I pay at Airgas.
