Placing light wide-ways vs long-ways

I'm looking for a good LED light for my new 29 gallon tank from petco. 30.3" x 12.5" x 18.8"

The obvious option would be to get a light that fits 24-36" so I can place it over my aquarium longways. Could I instead get a light that spans the 12" width?

Not sure what problems I would run into. I have no hood or anything like that.

Having a light that runs the length of the aquarium will have more even lighting than a light that runs the width.
