dying fish

I have a columbian blue tetra that is suddenly dying after a couple of years. It seems very stressed from its fast breathing action and its stomach is very large. The same thing happened a few weeks ago to a black widiw tetra and it eventually died. Has anyone experienced the same problem?

Some more information would be helpful. What are your water parameters?

It could be an internal parasite or a bacterial infection. Are the scales on the fish's belly sticking out, away from the body?

If so, it's more likely a bacterial infection like Dropsy.

Yes we could use some more info especially about water paremeters.

I say do a water change of 30 percent or so and maybe add some aquarium salt. It helps for me when ever I see a fish in stress.

my water parameters seem to be as they always are......a pH of 7 with soft water, and i change 20% of the water every week. The fish just has it mouth open all the time but today seemed to be more comfortable.

It the scales are sticking off the fish's body it is dropsy. That would also explain the growing stomach. Is it gasping near the surface, or on the bottom? Tank params are necessary to help see what's wrong!
