30g Shallow Pool Riparium

So after seeing many great shallow ripariums here, I decided to make my own.

Equipment
  • Tank: 24x24x12 Rimless (custom---couldn't find any Mr. Aquas around) @ ~30g
  • Filtration: Eheim 2215 (my first Eheim, going great so far)
  • Heating: 100W Eheim Jager
  • Lighting: 1x Kessil Amazon Sun (~1.5ft from the surface, 8 hr photoperiod)
  • Substrate: 5x 20lb bags of Eco Complete Fine Grade (really liking the look of this stuff so far---we'll see how the plants do in it compared to ordinary eco)

Plants

In shower caddies filled with Growstone:
  • Spathiphyllum sp. (Peace Lily, left)
  • Chamaedorea elegans (Parlor Palm, center)
  • Anthurium sp. (Anthurium Lily, right)

In DIY trellis rafts (cut from that interlocking foam people use for yoga mats---handy for the foam layer under the tank as well!), from left to right:
  • Pilea mollis
  • Dracaena godseffiana
  • Fittonia argyorneura
  • Mentha spicata (Spearmint)
  • Scindapsus pictus argyraeus (Philodendron)
  • Unknown (in the front---maybe an aluminum plant? not sure. "tropical assortment" package from a local hardware store---we'll see if any survive)

Tank and custom stand, prior to painting:

Adding the "sand" (you can see the stand painted now):

Anthurium Lily flower (yes, I cheated with the light here):

The whole set is available on Flickr.

No fauna just yet (apart from some snails that moved over on some moss I put in from another tank), but I have plans for:
  • Trichopsis pumila (Sparkling Gourami, probably 10-12)
  • Boraras brigittae (Chili Rasbora, 20+?)
  • Corydoras habrosus (Salt and Pepper Catfish)
  • Otocinclus sp.
  • Apistogramma sp. (not sure here... maybe?)

Lots of plants, loving the look.

I wonder what 4 of them in a square would look like. A crazier idea would be to have a 12"x24" column in the center of the four, bottom drilled with a pump cascading water down. With terrestrial house plants in pots between the cubes.

Unknown plant (in front of the Fittonia):

If it's the green with yellow spots that will be a codiaeum species. If it's the two below it they are Hypoestes phyllostachya, also known as polka dot plants
