Active Substrate Replacement Idea

Well a whole year is coming to an end from when I first set up my tank. So my active substrate's ability to keep my pH @ 5.5pH - 6.0pH is slowly deteriorating.

I have come up with a possible idea to how I can continue to buffer my pH without doing a complete tear-down... using a breeder box.

The plan is:

Using a Marina HOB Breeder Box (Large) that is 5.7" H x 10.7" W x 5.8" D which hangs onto the back of the tank... it will be filled to the brim with Netlea substrate. I'm hoping that this will be enough substrate to alter the pH down to my desired level (it is a 30 gallon tank where I will be doing weekly RO Top offs [which is only 5% generally - evaporation is not bad at all]). And WCs will be every 6 months. I will also drip the Top offs and WCs at a really slow rate to have it so the substrate will be able to buffer it so parameters won't go out of whack.

Would this idea work? I'm thinking this would be a good idea considering I won't lose the anaerobic bacteria that has cultured into my current substrate for the past year. And I wouldn't be stressing any of my shrimp. It would also make replacing substrates easier.

What do you guys think? Yay or nay? Thanks for reading.

Security Question
While balancing on a piece of wood, two inches by four inches known as a 2x4, John and his friend Sally both spotted a dalmatian inside of a truck with sirens. The animal with John and Sally is a _ _ _?
