Question

ADA aquasoil Amazonia powder

Hey everyone,

So my situation is that relying purely on the ammonia leached by the aquasoil, my tank has just finished cycling after about 19 days. My girlfriend bought a tank much more recently and she was/is frustrated to not be able to buy fish for a month. As such I told her that we would both wait until her tank was cycled too before we stock them together.

So my question is with regards to how long I can expect my aquasoil to leech ammonia? It will be at least a few more weeks with no other source of ammonia in the tank and I don't want my bacteria to go hungry and die.

Thanks for any advice or suggestions you can give.
Jonny

Pick up some ammonia with no surfactants from your local hardware or grocery store. You can use that to keep the bacteria alive. Just use it the same way people use it for a fishless cycle.

It isn't something you can really just buy in the UK, I checked every shop I could find in the town. I think it is because it is a common ingredient in bomb making.

Is it perhaps worth taking my Betta out of the community tank and popping him in there for a vacation until I get my shrimps?

you can do the betta or even use fish food. the food will can make a mess so vac very well before you add fish. either way your not going to have a lot of BB built up so dont fully stock your tank right away.

Unfortunately vacing isn't much of an option in this tank, why I wanted to avoid the fish food if possible. So basically if I don't stock now then I am going to lose a lot of the BB that I have built up so far?

The heavy stocking shouldn't be much problem, I am not going to be putting any more than 10 to 20 shrimp in to start with. So how many shrimp would you estimate to have a similar bioload to a Betta?

Sorry for yet more questions and thanks for the responses so far

you might be able to keep the food in a media bag or something you can remove?

if its just shrimp then i think you will be fine. the betta and shrimp are pretty close. what size is the tank?

It was 8.8 gallons, but minus the volume of rocks, wood, substrate etc. I would estimate it to be about 7 gallons.

I might be able to slowly lower a plastic pot in with some bloodworm, how long should I let it rot before swapping it out?

You can buy janitorial ammonia in the UK. You aren't likely to find it at your corner market, though.

I just found a source of it on Amazon, I'll have to wait until the 5th when I can afford it, so have popped Azul in the tank in the mean time. Thanks for all your help
