I bought 10 Turquoise Rainbowfish (melanotaenia lacustris) from petsmart for $3 each recently (one of their sales.)

They all survived fantastically. Now, I lost three during an ammonia spike from a filter malfunction.. But the rest of my 7 are now swimming happily.

I'll buy from PetSmart/PetCo, but I have the time/patience to sit there and watch the fish before I buy them. Plus, I usually put my fish in a hospital tank before my main tanks if they're joining other fish.

Got $10 worth of otos. Cardinals were not included. My store had the list from a previous post plus I believe they also had albino BN plecos. Lots of other sales throughout the store worth checking out as well

I got 6 ottos. I know its sad and a lot of them die, but I have a HECK of a lot of algae in my shrimp tanks. I have them in my main tank, then I will turn them loose in the shrimp tank. They are the only fish Totally shrimp safe according to Planetinverts. com. and some research of the internet. They are now in a tank with couple pieces of blanched zuc, their fave I hear.

I just posted the list so people would have an idea of what they had for sale.

The Petsmart in my town is very well managed. I've only had one fish die (an oto, so hit or miss anyway) after purchasing, and the tanks are clean. I'd say at least half of the girls that work there have tanks themselves and give pretty decent advice when asked.

I guess it does depend all on location because I got 5 Denison Barbs at a different location than where I got the 10 White Clouds that died, and they all lived.

My Petsmart isn't that bad either. I get feeders for my puffer there, and I have only had 1 otto die. The people who work there don't understand that a 5g is too small for a blood parrot, but the fish are healthy.

My Petco however is pretty bad. The tanks are almost always down due to sickness.

I do have a lfs that is pretty good as well, but I have heard they aren't stocking the tanks much, so go figure.

FWIW, my mortality rate of PetSmart fish has been absolutely 0 within 4 months of purchase. Beyond that, I attribute deaths to tank errors.

The mortality rate for my LFS has been almost 50%.

I have had mostly good luck at my local Petsmart and Petco, within reason. I QT all my fish for at least two weeks and watch for any irregular activity, discoloration / markings ect. Commonsense also helps if the fish look terrible I dont buy! The Petsmart in my area is also carrying some cool plants in the gel packs!
