Yes you do. Once you figure out your measured KH and GH values, you can use the value measured from the TDS meter to figure out how "dirty" your water is.

With those values, you have a total TDS of 126, not including the other stuff in the water.

(gh*17.9) + (kh*17.9)= 89.5 + 35.8 = 125.3ppm

It depends. That's why you need a TDS meter. You subtract the known values of the GH+KH from you TDS meter measurement to figure out how much other stuff is dissolved in the water. It could be nitrates, organic wastes, etc.
