Eggs?!?

So, about once every two weeks or so, I see these strange looking eggs on the top of my tank. It's a Fluval Edge and these eggs are on the underside of the lid.

I assume that they are snail eggs but all the photos I've seen online show white eggs that are round and these are certainly dark in colour and elongated. Plus, I haven't seen a bunch of snails crawling around my tank. I've had pond snails and mini ramshorns in the past but my assassin snail wiped them out (I thought).

I apologize for the quality of the pictures, but does anyone have any ideas?

Cheers,
Rob

My snails all lay round eggs in round sacks, only on leaves though. Maybe the neon tetras?

neon tetra eggs should sink to the bottom they are egg scatterers, oto fish eggs should be round and white. I'm not entirely sure that those are eggs, or if they are, that they are fish eggs. Need better pics if you can.

This is as good as it's probably going to get.

As you can see, a few have dropped since yesterday.

What kind of substrate do you have? And did you get any plants form the wild? That almsot looks like those water bugs, minus the legs. you know the ones that skate accross the water. Not my professional opinion just what they look like

Yeah I don't think they're eggs, maybe seeds or something? Take one out and see what if it's hard, or soft. Cut it open see if it's solid or hollow, this has me stumped and now I wanna know!

Substrate is Amazonia. No plants from the wild.

I've removed the things from the tank and have them in a cup in some tank water. Tried squishing one. It was hard. hard to tell if it was hollow or not as they are quite small. About 2mm in length.

Thanks for the help so far.

Cheers,
Rob

I'm leaning more and more towards seeds, not sure where they would of came from though. Have any of your plants flowered? Not sure if any plants we would use in an aquarium would produce seeds though, I'm not a plant guru.

I haven't seen anything flower or any seed pod like things on any of my plants. There's quite a lot in there though, so ill need to have a better poke around to be sure.

I'll update if I see anything happen with the seeds/eggs/whatever.

I was thinking of all the things I feed the shrimp in that tank. Zucc, cucumber, spinach, yam. But none of them have dark seeds. It's also odd that there are none there one evening and the next morning there's a large smear of them all in one spot. It is like they are deposited or released all at once. That's why I thought they were eggs, but seeds makes sense too.

They also kind of look like scat of some kind. But I don't know of anything that produces floating droppings once a fortnight.

Lol the first thing that went through my head was mouse poop! Couldn't figure out how'd the mice would of been able to hold their breath long enough to poop that much, so I tossed that idea out the window.
