1st moss mat attempt

First off hello!

I have a 125 discus tank that I have been transitioning into a heavily planted tank. Last year it had just some big swords. A few months ago I started adding crypts, vail, teardrop rotilla, and such. I upgraded the lighting to finnex ray2 LEDs a couple months ago. Really awesome lights.

Yesterday I made my 1st moss mat. I will be using it as a foreground. After watching several videos on YouTube, I basically copied what I saw. But on a bigger scale.

To make my mat I used 2 pieces of plastic mesh matting from Michael's at $.59 each. Plastic thread at $1.99 and I bought a pack of blunt yarn needles at $1.99. The moss is peacock moss I got from a forum member. 4 nice portions for $32 shipped.

My mat is 9 inches on left side. 24 inches front. 4 inches right side. And waved back to fit the tank scape. The moss was spread thin but I think it was just enough. I used some small pieces of shale I had for weight. Sewed right in. Also it may have been overkill but I stitched through every hole on the outer edge to prevent small fish from getting trapped.

The design and fit in the tank seems solid. Just have to wait for it to grow now. I really hope it turns out like I want. Keeping my fingers crossed.

This morning I am seeing the very 1st sprouts through the mat. I anticipate that it will take at least a couple months to fill in.

Still not much growth through the mat. Just little tips of the moss poking out of the plastic here abd there.

The moss is indeed beginning to grow through the mat, but the growth is much slower then I thought it would be. Just about 4 weeks in and it looks like it may take months to get the effect I want.

The shale inside should weigh it down, no?

It's not that the whole thig will float up, the corners will float up a little and it becomes an eye sore

this looks good, just use some rock to weight it down. SS mesh is good, yeah, but its not really that customizable like this.
