very old filter media

so i almost a year ago i bought a used canister filter from a friend who hadn't used it in a year, but had kept the media most the whole time. i got it and changed the water, and left it sitting since. the inlet and outlet connections have been left open. would you say that bacteria is still alive and good? or do you think i will have a cycle when i connect it to a established tank?

If there has not been fresh water running through it its a goner. if its been in use on a cycled tank, it still should be good.

The bacteria in the filter is long gone.

Just moist is not enough. Bacteria need to eat, too.

What, is this a Public Service Announcement or something? Sounds like a slogan! We need bumper stickers!
